11/08/99 Harborough watches total eclipse.
On the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of August 1999, Harborough, like the rest of the country, witnessed the total eclipse of the sun.
Being in the penumbra, the region saw the moon pass over 95% of the sun's surface. This meant that we did not experience darkness at the point of totality, but the change in the light became very apparent, as if looking through a heavy pair of sun glasses.
Although the day was warm, with the sun high in a clear blue sky, the most remarkable feature was the sudden drop in temperature as the moon passed in front of the sun.
The event was over in around two and a half hours.
