18/07/99 French market traders
visit the town.
 |
| On a beautiful sunny and warm day on
Sunday 19th July, a multitude of French Traders from Le Havre set up their
stalls in the Square, for a two day French Market event. By 11.00 a.m., a huge
crowd had amassed and was flocking round the stalls to take in the French
atmosphere. On offer on the stalls were onions and garlic, a formidable range
of French cheeses, sheep and goat sausages, warm sugary coated peanuts and warm
French crepes. There were also leather goods, jewellery, dolls, home made jams
and biscuits and French fashion for the ladies. |
The children were also catered for
with a giant Old Mother Hubbard's House to explore.
The open air event, organised jointly by Harborough District
Council and the Market Harborough Chamber of Trade, was the first of it's kind
this far North of France, and brought a real market atmosphere to the town, and
gave us all some idea of what the market on the Square must have been like in
years gone by.
