19/02/2003 Official opening of the
Great Glen Bypass.
After a two-month delay, the
Great Glen bypass on the A6 was opened following an official ceremony at
just after 1.00pm today. Originally scheduled to open in December 2002,
the bypass will provide much needed relief to residents of the village of
Great Glen, which has suffered serious congestion at peak times, along with
fatal and other accidents near its notorious double bends along the former
route.
Despite the opening, a large portion of road connecting the bypass at its
southern end with the village of Kibworth Harcourt remains uncompleted,
as does work on one of the three over bridges near Paddock's Farm.
The new three and a half mile dual carriageway, built mainly by contractors
Skanska, passes south of Great Glen, with a bridge over the River Sence,
where a number of problems besieged early work on the bridge. Geologists
were also called in, when an Anglo-Roman grave containing a skeleton and
several artifacts was unearthed during excavation work during 2002. |
